This Manual replaces the Visitor Monitoring Training Manual published by SNH in 1993.
It is built on sound practical experience of undertaking monitoring programmes, good practice from around the UK and recent research on visitor monitoring.
The Manual draws and builds on two previous visitor monitoring studies:
- The Management for People manual published by SNH in 2004. This document introduced a "Visitor Management System" to help site managers gather and assess visitor information.
- Guidance on Monitoring Access and Recreation at Sensitive Natural Heritage Sites published by SNH in 2008. This document introduced a structure for a Visitor Monitoring Strategy process to help site managers plan and implement monitoring of visitors and possible impacts on the natural heritage.
Monitoring is critical to successful management and this new Manual complements the above studies by providing a practical toolkit to help site managers to design and implement an effective Visitor Monitoring Strategy.
